How Google calculates links?

Everybody know, Google, by a mile, is the best search engine in the world. The reason for it is the accuracy with which it returns search results. Almost all the times it returns the result that matches the search term. This is due to the path-breaking page rank algorithm adopted by Google. You can find more about this here.

Now to the links. Google weights pages on the basis of links it receives from other pages. Thus if Site A is found in pages Site B and Site C then, Site A is ranked higher than Site B and Site C. In other words, the inbound links to a page is one of the determinants of the page's ranking in search engine. In Google, we can find this out by typing link:followed by the website address. For example, you could take the Google website as example. Go to Google search then type www.google.com. It would display the following result:

Google
Enables users to search the Web, Usenet, and images. Features include PageRank, caching and translation of results, and an option to find similar pages.
www.google.com/

Google can show you the following information for this URL:

Now, click on the Find web pages that link to www.google.com .This would display the number of sites that link to Google.
Now, click on the Find web pages that contain the term "www.google.com". This would also display the number of sites that has the term www.google.com
But it is not so. Because in almost all the web development softwares if you type a website address they would automatically transfer it to a hyperlink. This is also true for newsgroups and chats. So, by majority all the sites that contain the term www.google.com should have hyperlinked it. So why come this irony.
This is because Google displays links only above a certain page rank. I amn't sure about above which page rank it displays the results. Maybe PR4 or PR5. Thus, if you have 10 sites link to you which have a pagerank of 1 and 2 sites links to you which have a page rank of 8 then, Google would show only there are two sites linking to you. But don't worry, all the pages that contain links to your sites are calculated in Pagerank algorithm. That's why many webmasters want their sites to be linked to sites that have a higher pagerank. To have a test, just consider the following:
Find web pages that link to allforall.bravehost.com
Find web pages that contain the term "allforall.bravehost.com"
If you click on the first one, you won't see any links
But if you click on the second one, you would see a lot(infact close to 1000).
So getting a lot of sites linking to you doesn't work with Google. You should get links from quality sites that have a higher pagerank to increase your ranking in search engines. That's why sites listed in link farms doesnt' really shoot up. Never ever apply or join a link farmm unless you have no other option.

You could also test this the following web page.
Search for link:www.ronpatrickstuff.com on Google. This site has just got one page(only one page) still it has a stunning pagerank of 5. It also doesn't have a lot of links(infact less than 10). But still it is rated higher because it has got links in websites that have a pagerank of more than 5. So it is clear that quality sites should vote you to get a pagerank as in case of www.ronpatrickstuff.com. Else, you would be lingering in the dark inspite of numerous links just as allforall.bravehost.com

Google also doesn't consider links within your site as valid links(but they are considered for the purpose of pagernak calculation. Its also true that they are displayed as links if they have better page ranks). Also,Google makes a distinction between www.google.com and http://www.google.com. You can test this by typing in Google search "www.google.com" and "http://www.google.com".But the more the number of pages, the better would be your pagerank. But it is true only to a certain extent. I don't think you can have a pagerank of more than 6 by just adding pages. Remember, pagerank is just one of the factors that determines your ranking in Google search engine. Concentrate more on your content that anything else as the saying goes "Content is the king" and it is true. Sites with better, clean and quality content would always rank higher.

So, you might have now come to known how Google calculates link. The search results for the above may vary due to different domains of Google. If you think something is fishy or wrong about this, you may post your comment.

Pamukkale - a natural wonder in Turkey

Pamukkale is one of the extraordinary natural wonders of Turkey. The great attraction is the white immensity of the cliff with sculptured basins full of water and congealed waterfalls; they seem done of snow, cloud, cotton. This should be seen to be believed.Click on a pciture to get its enlarged view.

The scientific explanation is the hot thermal places that lie under the mount provoke the calcium carbonate spill, that makes the forms as solid as travertino marble.

It is a protecting landscape that fascinates, as the action of the mineral waters that contains calcium oxides left fantastic marks in the structures. The resultant effect is spectacular: the waters spill on a series of steps, forming solid cascades and pools.

As much the cascades of calcium carbonate as the water change color in accordance with changes of the solar light that illuminates them, and the effect is surprising.

At times white, others blue, or green or other colors. The spectacle is flaring.

The continuous dynamics of the erosion and the transformation of the natural landscape result in an unusual environment.

PAMUKKALE is one of the most unique phenomena in nature.

A magical and extraordinary natural wonder, unique in the world,
The nearby ancient city Hierapolis is another tourist attraction.

Google to allow free downloads of books

A good news for book readers and book lovers. Google has begin letting users download and print free of charge classic novels and many other that are in the public domain. Using Google's book search, users can now download their favourite books in PDF format(the entire book) and can print them on paper. Google supports these service , as always, by serving text ads on the search results pages. This does not include books that are copyrighted. Google's Book Search service is the product of its Books Library Project, which is digitizing books from major libraries around the world in order to make them searchable online. Its partners include the University of Michigan, Harvard University, Stanford University, Oxford University, the University of California and the New York Public Library. Google is also conducting a pilot project with the Library of Congress.

How to download books from Google?
  1. Go to Google book search or click here
  2. Enter the name of the book you are searching for and select Full view books option.

Author's comments
Though Google is by far the best and the most popular search engine, the same has acted as a doubel edged sword for them. People all over the world come to Google for search, just for search. Inspite of a lot of products introduced by Google, they could never match Yahoo in presenting the web users a compact view. More than 70% of the people who visit Google visit it exclusively for search. Inspite of products like Picasa and Google Earth, Google is still fighting it out to match Yahoo in web user experience and Microsoft in Desktop applications(I don't think Google could match Microsoft). Gmail turned out to be a success and looks good. With internet usage on the rise(in Asia and Africa), more and more people are searching for quality books. I think this is a good move from Google and I hope this could be a success. But Google should also look forward to copyrighted books, which has already put Google in a spot of bother.

Sand sculptures

Have you heard or seen sand sculptures. If not then you might have heard about pyramids, one of the oldest works in sand.A sand castle is a type of sand sculpture which resembles a miniature building, often (but not always) a castle. The two basic building ingredients, sand and water, are available in abundance on a sandy beach and so most sand play occurs there, or in a sandbox. Thus sand sculptures are entirely sand structures. Something great.
The British seaside tradition of building sandcastles on the beach with bucket and spade has long been overtaken by a new art form in various parts of the world - sand sculptures. With the right sand consistency and a few simple tools, the possibilities of building spectacular sculptures are endless

Sand storm in Iraq

Have you ever seen or heard of a sandstorm. If no, then read below

Sandstorm - Definition
A strong wind carrying sand particles through the air. They are low level occurences, usually only ten feet in height to not more than fifty feet above the surface. Due to the frequent winds created by surface heating, they are most predominate during the day and die out in the night. Visibility is reduced to between 5/8ths and 6/16ths statute mile, and if less than 5/16ths, then the storm is considered a heavy sandstorm. It is reported as "SS" in an observation and on the METAR.

Sandstorms are popular in countries that have deserts due to huge amount of sand. See below a picture of how sandstorm originates. This is a real incident of sandstorm that occured in Iraq on April 26, 2005

World's oldest person dies

QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- Maria Esther de Capovilla, believed to be the world's oldest person, has died at 116, her granddaughter said.

Catherine Capovilla, 46, a property manager and real estate agent in Miami, said Capovilla died Sunday at 3 a.m. local time in a hospital in the coastal city of Guayaquil. She died two days after coming down with pneumonia. Her funeral was planned for Monday.

Born on September 14, 1889 -- the same year as Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler -- Capovilla was married in 1917 and widowed in 1949.

Robert Young, senior consultant for Gerontology for Guinness World Records, said Elizabeth Bolden of Memphis, Tenn., now appears to be the oldest person alive.

"Guinness World Records will have to make an official announcement from London," he said. "For all practical purposes, the next oldest person is going to be presumed to be Elizabeth Bolden. She is 116, but she was born 11 months after Capovilla."

Nanotechnology

Anybody interested in nanotechnology.
Just read this

Nanotechnology Basics

What is Nanotechnology? Answers differ depending on who you ask, and their background. Broadly speaking however, nanotechnology is the act of purposefully manipulating matter at the atomic scale, otherwise known as the "nanoscale."

Coined as "nano-technology" in a 1974 paper by Norio Taniguchi at the University of Tokyo, and encompassing a multitude of rapidly emerging technologies, based upon the scaling down of existing technologies to the next level of precision and miniaturization. Taniguchi approached nanotechnology from the 'top-down' standpoint, from the viewpoint of a precision engineer.

Foresight Nanotech Institute Founder K. Eric Drexler introduced the term "nanotechnology" to the world in 1986, using it to describe a 'bottom-up' approach. Drexler approaches nanotechnology from the point-of-view of a physicist, and defines the term as "large-scale mechanosynthesis based on positional control of chemically reactive molecules." See our Press Kit History of Nanotechnology for details.

In the future, "nanotechnology" will likely include building machines and mechanisms with nanoscale dimensions, referred to these days as Molecular Nanotechnology (MNT).
